Soft dig — also called vacuum excavation, air excavation, or potholing — is a non-destructive excavation technique that uses either compressed air or low-pressure water to loosen soil, combined with a high-powered vacuum to remove the loosened material. Unlike mechanical digging tools, soft dig is gentle enough to expose even the most fragile underground utilities without damage.

In South Florida's dense utility corridors, where fiber optic cables, gas lines, water mains, storm drains, and sanitary sewers often share the same right-of-way, the risk of a utility strike during excavation is significant. A single strike on a fiber optic cable can knock out broadband service for thousands of customers. A gas line strike can be fatal. Soft dig eliminates this risk by giving operators visual, hands-on confirmation of utility locations before any mechanical equipment is brought in.

US Utility Services uses both air-vacuum and hydro-vacuum methods for soft dig, selecting the approach based on soil type, utility sensitivity, and project specifications. Air excavation is often preferred around electrical utilities and fiber optics where the presence of water could be problematic.
